Board terms/participation

- Knowledge of/experience with Ethiopia, its culture, and its current health challenges
- Experience with international NGOs
- Knowledge of/connections to the global health community
- Fundraising experience
Responsibilities
Specific Board Member responsibilities include:
- Actively engage in fundraising activities, including cultivation and stewardship of donors
- Consider BNCO a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority
- Serve as an ambassador and advocate for the organization: inform others about the organization, represent BNCO to stakeholders, and work to enhance BNCO’s public image
- Search out opportunities to educate the public about BNCO’s work
- Assist in identifying and recruiting other Board Members
- Be informed about BNCO's policies and programs; monitor programs and actively promote BNCO’s mission
- Serve as an advisor in developing, implementing, and evaluating BNCO’s strategic plan
- Assist in planning for the future, monitoring operations, and evaluating the organization’s performance
- Approve the annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; be informed of and meet all legal and fiduciary responsibilities
- Attend board and committee meetings and functions, such as special events
- Review agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings
- Serve on committees or task forces, and offer to take on special assignments
Qualifications
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who has an interest in making a difference on a nonprofit board. Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
- Previous nonprofit board experience preferred, particularly experience with boards of small, grassroots NGOs
- Professional experience in business, global health, technology, or the nonprofit sector
- A commitment to and understanding of BNCO’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience
- Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and building consensus among diverse individuals
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and an investment and commitment to helping improve the lives of vulnerable children
- Able to commit at least 6 hours per month
