February Fundraiser a big success!!

Two hundred people gathered on the evening of February 26th to raise money for the Richard Oslund Memorial Clinic and the orphan programs of BNCO.  The program included an excellent Ethiopian dinner, silent auction, raffle, Ethiopian dance, dramatic poetry readings and a Raise-The-Paddle opportunity to donate to BNCO. Ezra Teshome, our keynote speaker, highlighted his life-saving work with Rotary in Africa. The event raised $28,000 to help meet our goal of upgrading the clinic by October 2011.

BNCO in Ethiopia

We currently employ fourteen people to support our operations in Ethiopia in the cities of Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar.  The Richard Oslund Medical Clinic in Addis Ababa offers programs seven days a week to residents of the Kolfe-Kerrano sub-city.

CLINIC PROGRAMS:  We have treated more than 400 patients at our clinic in Addis Ababa since its opening in October.  Most of these patients have returned to the clinic multiple times.  There is a desperate need to upgrade the clinic to a Medium Clinic so we can treat more conditions on-site rather than referring patients to larger, more distant clinics, a huge barrier to treatment for the poor people of the Kolfe-Kerrano sub-city.  We recently started a community house-to-house health survey that includes vaccinations and information about clinic programs.

HEALTH EDUCATION:  Every Sunday afternoon we offer Health Education classes for the women of Kolfe-Kerrano. We’ve served 175 women in the four eight-week long classes we’ve offered this year.

ORPHAN PROGRAMS:  After successfully graduating fifteen orphans this year, we currently support 57 orphans: 30 in Addis Ababa and 27 in Bahir Dar.  We expect to add up to fifteen children this year.  The Board has initiated a savings program for orphans so when they graduate from our program they will have a stipend to start them on their life’s journey.

Grant Success

BNCO recently received two grants to help support our programs.

1. Thank you all who voted for the BNCO’s youth group video in the Verity Credit Union Cartwheel for a Cause Contest; it was awarded $200 which is going towards the youth group’s “Chicks for Chickens” project. The BNCO youth advocates wrote a youth-created and led grant proposal to provide chickens, feed, and coops to foster families to get much needed protein from eggs.  The Mother House Fund recently awarded a $2000 grant and our youth volunteer intern from Scotland, Mhairi Young, is in Ethiopia working on it this summer.

2. Church In The World: Blue Nile Children’s Organization was awarded a grant of $1,500 from the St. Mark’s Church In The World Partner Ministries Program.  Funds will be used to buy teff (primary grain and food staple), which is distributed as an incentive to increase enrollment in and attendance at the Clinic’s extremely successful health education program.

BNCO Board Sets Calendar and Goals for 2011

On May 21, 2011, the Board of BNCO established goals and a calendar for the remainder of 2011.  Both of these documents can be viewed on our website at www.bluenile.org.  Officers were also elected for 2011-2013.  President:  Mark Kuiper; Vice-President: Janet Campbell; Secretary: Britt Nederhood; Treasurer: Mensur Mohammed. Our grant writer, Fran Kremen, also officially joined the Board at this meeting. We currently have eight members of our Board of Directors.  Board meetings are held at the Leffler House adjacent to St. Mark’s Cathedral on Capital Hill.  We encourage anyone interested in becoming more involved with BNCO to attend a BNCO Board Meeting.  For more information contact info@bluenile.org.

We Need Your Help to Save Lives in Ethiopia

  1. BE A CLINIC SPONSOR:  Clinic sponsors donate $15/month or $180/year.  $180 will buy one month of a physician’s services in Ethiopia.
  2. BE A CHILD SPONSOR:  Child sponsors donate $30/month or $360/year.  Currently we support 57 children, but would like to support more of the thousands of orphans living in Addis Ababa. Since we don’t have enough sponsors, some sponsors support more than one child.
  3. NO BAKE/BAKE SALE:  Donate any amount that works for you as part of our non-event.

Thank you for being one of the 362 people who donate time, money, or materials to make this organization a success!  As an all-volunteer organization in Seattle, every dollar we earn goes to support our programs in Ethiopia.

To make a donation, please visit www.bluenile.org/donate/. Thanks for supporting our Ethiopian orphans and families.

Cartwheel for a cause

As we’re gearing up for our big benefit this weekend, we wanted to share a fun competition that we’re entering.  Alicia Colovos, one of our board members, helped a group of fourteen year old girls create the video below.  The girls collectively sponsor a child in Ethiopia.  The video has been entered into Verity Credit Union’s Cartwheel for a Cause competition, which is giving away $6,000 to worthy causes.  Please vote for us in the competition on the right-hand side of the Cartwheel for a Cause web page.  We’re number “29. Alicia Colovos.”  Thanks for your support!

Building a future … one child at a time.

Blue Nile Children’s Organization (BNCO) is a Seattle-based non-profit organization that serves orphaned children in Ethiopia.  Through BNCO’s Child Sponsorship Program, donors directly support orphaned children for just $30/month, which provides food, clothing and education all the way through college graduation.  BNCO also built and runs a medical clinic near Addis Ababa which serves our children, their families, and others in need in the surrounding community.  Feel free to explore the site to learn more, get involved, or contact us.

Sponsors’ Appreciation Dinner

Thanks to everybody who came out to Habesha Restaurant tonight for the sponsors’ appreciation dinner. It’s wonderful getting a chance to meet other worldly and generous people who support BNCO.

As promised, we’ve added Gift Certificates to the web site as another way to support Blue Nile and share this passion of yours with your loved ones.

Also, anybody who is interested is welcome to join us at the next board meeting this Saturday, December 11th at 10AM at the Leffler House Board Room across from St. Marks Cathedral in Seattle.

ROMC History

The Richard Oslund Memorial Clinic (ROMC) started construction in 2008 in the community of Kolfe-Keranio on the outskirts of Addis Ababa (map) near where many of our sponsored orphans live.  Construction was funded by many generous donors, but especially Richard Oslund, who left a large gift to BNCO to start the clinic.

In October 2010, the clinic officially opened its doors as a “Low Clinic”, a designation by the Ethiopian Ministry of Health which allows the clinic to perform basic health care for the community such as vaccinations, well-child exams and health education classes.  At this level, many unwell patients must be referred to other clinics for care.  BNCO’s most important goal for 2011 is to upgrade the clinic’s status to a “Medium Clinic.”  A Medium Clinic would allow us to offer much more intensive care for the community, providing services that are badly needed.  But before the clinic can be approved as a Medium Clinic, we must invest significantly in medical equipment.  Please help us achieve this goal by donating to the clinic today.

Clinic Sponsorship

Dear Friends of Blue Nile Children’s Organization,

Blue Nile Children’s Organization (BNCO) has established the Richard Oslund Memorial Clinic (ROMC) and a guest house in an impoverished area of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The clinic sponsorship program is asking for a minimum donation of  $10.00 per month (only 35 cents per day). We project that a $10.00 per month donation from 1,000 sponsors will be sufficient to cover the necessary expenses of the Service Plan.

Service Plan

BNCO plans to treat 50 to 60 patients per day 5 days a week (250 to 300 patients per week) or 1,000 to 1,200 patients per month. We have already started a community health education program. We have trained ten community health workers and are conducting health surveys, collecting preliminary information in the community for the clinic’s long-term education and training program. Our health professionals will also educate the community one Saturday a month. Please take part in this humanitarian project and support us to help the destitute in Ethiopia. This is a grass roots organization and you can review our efforts and check all information any time you wish.

To participate, please contact us at (206) 760-2873 or email info@bluenile.org.

You may also get involved by creating your own committee to recruit more sponsors for the support of our humanitarian efforts. Our target day to open the clinic is June 1, 2010. As of now, BNCO must strive to recruit more than 500 sponsors donating the minimum in order to open the clinic on time.

Your involvement is highly needed and we thank you for your invaluable support.
